the short version: notei's editor needs a free account (the education edition at app.notei.co/edu doesn't), but the scores you make still stay in your browser until you choose a feature that needs the cloud. we only collect what we need to run notei, we don't sell your data, and if we know you're 18 or older we keep your requests to the assistant, linked to your account, to improve our models and to diagnose faults, unless you turn "help improve notei" off (it's never on for anyone under 18); education-edition work is never used for training.
this depends on how you use notei. we collect:
in plain english: we use your data to run notei and its features, and for little else.
we keep your requests to the assistant, including compose and arrange requests, to improve our models and to diagnose faults when a generation goes wrong. a kept request can include your prompt, the notes you gave the model, the settings, what it generated, whether you kept it, and any error. each one is linked to your account, and you have to be signed in to use the assistant, so nothing is kept for signed-out visitors. this is on by default, but only for an account we know is 18 or older, from the year of birth you gave at sign-up or an earlier confirmation that you're 18 or older. the "help improve notei" box at the year-of-birth step of sign-up is already ticked, and you can untick it there, or turn it off any time in settings > privacy > "help improve notei"; once it's off, we stop keeping your future requests. your choice is saved to your account and holds on every device. if you've already said no and that answer is saved to your account, it stands; settings > privacy shows where yours is. an account created before september 27, 2026 keeps the setting it had then, which was off unless you turned it on, so nothing changes for it until you turn it on in settings > privacy. it's never on for anyone under 18 or for an account whose age we don't know, and for those accounts the setting is locked off. if we can't read your account's age or your choice when a request comes in, we keep nothing. turning it off doesn't by itself erase requests we already hold, so email [email protected] if you want those removed.
our legal basis. because this is on unless you turn it off, it doesn't rest on your consent. for people in the eu and uk, we rely on our legitimate interests in improving notei's ai assistant and fixing faults in it. we've weighed those interests against your privacy and written that assessment down: we keep only what you send the assistant, never use it to advertise to you or profile you, never keep it for anyone under 18, and let you turn it off in one step. you have the right to object, and turning the setting off is how you do it; we honour that without asking for a reason. for people in singapore, we rely on the pdpa's exception for using personal data to improve our own products and services, and you can still turn it off at any time.
education-edition work is never used for training. we do not sell your personal data.
the promise: the assistant only reads the score you currently have open — nothing else.
when you use the ai assistant, we send the text of your request and your currently-open score to our ai model providers so they can answer or make the edit. the assistant does not see your other scores, your files, or anything outside the score you're working on. music-generation features send note data, not audio.
under our providers' terms, they process your request only to return a result and do not use your content to train their models. if we know you're 18 or older, notei keeps your requests to the assistant to improve its own models unless you turn "help improve notei" off (it's never on for anyone under 18), and it never uses education-edition work for training.
audio you hum or record is used only to produce notation — not to identify you or build a voiceprint. where a transcription feature runs entirely in your browser, that audio never leaves your device.
in plain english: we don't sell your personal data.
we share data only with the service providers that help us run notei — hosting and infrastructure, our ai model providers, our email provider, and our payment processor — and each only for the job it does for us. we may also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect notei and its users. we don't use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking.
in plain english: we use youtube's api to post our own marketing clips to our own youtube channel. it never touches your account or your data.
notei uses youtube api services to publish the short educational videos you may have seen on @trynotei. that is the whole of it. we do not read, store, embed or analyse anyone else's youtube content, we do not ask you to connect a youtube account, and no notei user is ever prompted to authorise one. the only account our software is authorised against is the notei channel itself, by us.
because of that, we collect and store no youtube user data about you — there is nothing of yours held under this integration to request, correct or delete. if that ever changes, this section changes with it before the feature ships.
by using youtube api services, we are bound by the youtube terms of service, and google's handling of any data it receives is governed by the google privacy policy. if you have ever granted an application access to your google account, you can review and revoke it at any time at google's security settings page.
in plain english: we use posthog to understand how notei gets used. if you're in the eea, the uk, or switzerland, we ask before setting any analytics cookie.
posthog records which pages you view, which links and buttons you click, and which forms you submit — not the contents of your music. if you're in the eea, the uk, or switzerland you get a banner, and no analytics cookie is set until you answer it; visitors elsewhere are accepted by default. accepting sets two cookies: notei_consent, which remembers your answer for 180 days, and posthog's own analytics cookie. both are set on notei.co, so one answer covers this site and the app.
declining doesn't switch measurement off. if you decline, the only cookie we set is the notei_consent one that records your answer. posthog sets no cookie of its own, stores nothing in your browser, and records no session replay — but your visit is still counted, using a privacy-preserving identifier posthog works out on its own servers rather than one kept on your device. deleting the notei_consent cookie brings the banner back so you can change your answer.
session replay. if you accept, posthog records a replay of your session — a reconstruction of what each page looked like and how you moved through it. anything you type into a form field is masked before it leaves your browser. in the app, every word on the page is masked too, so a replay of the app shows where text was but never what it said. that covers your email address, your name, your score titles, and what you and the assistant write. three things in the app are replaced by a blank block and are never recorded at all: the notation canvas, the conductor view, and your conversation with the ai assistant. your music and your ai conversations don't appear in a replay. replay doesn't run on the sign-in, password-reset and onboarding pages, or for a signed-in account unless we know it is 18 or older. what a replay of the app does show is the shape of the interface (menus, toolbars, dialogs) and which buttons you press, noted by which element it was, never the text on it. on notei.co itself, where you are never signed in, a replay shows the site's own text.
scores in your browser stay until you clear them. cloud-saved scores and account data are kept while your account is active. when you delete a score or your account, we remove it — except for backups that age out on a normal schedule, and anything we must keep to meet legal or accounting obligations. requests kept while "help improve notei" was on are held for as long as we need them to train and evaluate our models; when you delete your account, the link between those requests and you is removed.

in plain english: notei is meant for people 13 and older.
notei is intended for people aged 13 and up, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. in the eu, the minimum age of digital consent is set by each country and ranges from 13 to 16 — where a higher age applies to you, that age governs. if you believe a child under 13 has given us personal data, email [email protected] and we'll delete it.
notei is a global web product, and our providers may process data in countries other than yours, including the united states. where the law requires it, we use appropriate safeguards for those transfers.
we may update this policy as notei grows. we'll change the "last updated" date above and, for material changes, give notice in the app or by email.
