privacy policy

last updated: july 17, 2026

the short version: you can use notei without an account, and the scores you make stay in your browser until you choose a feature that needs the cloud. we only collect what we need to run notei, we don't sell your data, and we don't use your music to train ai models.

what data we collect

this depends on how you use notei. we collect:

  • account and email. if you create an account or join our email list, we collect your email address and the basic info needed to sign you in and send you updates.
  • your scores and uploads. the scores you create and the files you import (midi, musicxml, pdf scans, and audio). by default these live only in your browser. they reach us only when you use a feature that needs the cloud, such as saving a score to your account.
  • microphone and audio. if you hum or sing into your mic for transcription, we process that audio to turn it into notation.
  • your currently-open score, for the ai. when you ask the assistant something, we send the score you have open so it can answer or make an edit. see the ai section below.
  • payment info. if you upgrade to a paid plan, our payment processor handles your card details directly. we never see or store your full card number.
  • usage and technical basics. like any website, our infrastructure processes basic technical data such as your ip address, browser type, and request logs to run and secure notei. we also use basic product analytics to see which features get used, not the contents of your music.

how we use your data

in plain english: we use your data to run notei and its features, and for little else.

  • to run the editor, save your work when you ask, and answer your ai requests
  • to send you the email updates you signed up for (you can unsubscribe from any message)
  • to keep notei secure, diagnose problems, and understand which features to improve

we do not use your scores to train ai models, and we do not sell your personal data.

ai, transcription, and your open score

the promise: the assistant only reads the score you currently have open — nothing else.

when you use the ai assistant, we send the text of your request and your currently-open score to our ai model providers so they can answer or make the edit. the assistant does not see your other scores, your files, or anything outside the score you're working on. music-generation features send note data, not audio.

under our providers' terms, they process your request only to return a result and do not use your content to train their models. we don't use your scores to train ai either.

audio you hum or record is used only to produce notation — not to identify you or build a voiceprint. where a transcription feature runs entirely in your browser, that audio never leaves your device.

how your data is shared

in plain english: we don't sell your personal data.

we share data only with the service providers that help us run notei — hosting and infrastructure, our ai model providers, our email provider, and our payment processor — and each only for the job it does for us. we may also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect notei and its users. we don't use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking.

how long we keep your data

scores in your browser stay until you clear them. cloud-saved scores and account data are kept while your account is active. when you delete a score or your account, we remove it — except for backups that age out on a normal schedule, and anything we must keep to meet legal or accounting obligations.

your rights and choices

  • you can use notei without an account, edit or delete your cloud scores anytime, and delete your account.
  • you can unsubscribe from our email list at any time.
  • depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete the personal data we hold, and to withdraw consent you've given. eu and uk residents can complain to their data-protection authority; singapore residents can contact the personal data protection commission (pdpc); california residents have rights under the ccpa, and we don't sell or share personal information as those terms are defined there.

to exercise any of these, email [email protected] and we'll respond as the law requires.

children and students

in plain english: notei is meant for people 13 and older.

notei is intended for people aged 13 and up, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. in the eu, the minimum age of digital consent is set by each country and ranges from 13 to 16 — where a higher age applies to you, that age governs. if you believe a child under 13 has given us personal data, email [email protected] and we'll delete it.

international users

notei is a global web product, and our providers may process data in countries other than yours, including the united states. where the law requires it, we use appropriate safeguards for those transfers.

changes to this policy

we may update this policy as notei grows. we'll change the "last updated" date above and, for material changes, give notice in the app or by email.
