the short version: notei is a browser-based music notation editor with an ai assistant, and it's in beta, so things will change. the music you make is yours, ai output can be wrong so always check it, and you're responsible for what you publish.
these terms govern your use of notei. by using notei you agree to them and to our privacy policy. if you don't agree, please don't use notei.
heads up: notei is in beta — expect changes and the occasional rough edge.
notei runs in your web browser. you can write multi-part notation, play it back, import and export files (midi, musicxml, pdf, and audio), hum or record a melody and have it transcribed, and use an ai assistant to harmonize, arrange, vary, extend, and give feedback. you don't need an account to use the editor. because notei is in beta, features may change or be removed, and we don't promise the service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
you must be at least 13 years old — or older, where your country sets a higher minimum age of digital consent — to create an account. an account is optional and is only needed if you want to save your scores to the cloud and reach them from other devices. keep your sign-in secure, and tell us at [email protected] if you believe someone accessed your account without permission.
in plain english: you own the music you write.
the notation, melodies, recordings, and files you create or upload in notei are yours. we don't claim ownership of your work.
to run notei, you give us a limited license to store, process, transmit, and display your content solely to operate the editor and its features — for example, saving a score, sending your open score to an ai model to answer your request, or rendering playback. this license exists only so the features work, and it ends when you delete the content or close your account, except for backups that age out on a normal schedule. we don't sell your music, and we don't use your scores to train ai models.
ai-assisted output (such as harmonize, arrange, vary, and extend results) works differently: to the extent notei holds any rights in it, we assign those rights to you. but we can't promise ai output is original, copyrightable, or free of anyone else's rights — under current us law, purely machine-generated material may not qualify for copyright at all.
you're responsible for what you put into notei. you confirm you have the rights to any melody, audio, or file you hum, record, upload, or import, and you agree to cover claims and reasonable costs that arise from the content you provide, or from music you make in notei and then publish, perform, or distribute.
in plain english: ai output can be wrong — always check it before you rely on it.
notei's ai features are assistive and probabilistic. a harmonization may miss what you wanted, a transcription may misread notes, and an explanation of music theory may come out imperfect. we provide ai output "as is," with no warranty that it's correct, original, or fit for any purpose, and it is not professional advice.
always review ai output before you rely on it, and don't treat a factual claim it makes as true without checking it yourself. you are responsible for the final music you publish, perform, submit, or distribute, including making sure it doesn't infringe anyone else's rights.
you agree not to:
notei has a free tier with real, ongoing functionality at no cost. a paid plan raises your limits and unlocks additional features.
before you pay, the price, the billing frequency, and the fact that the plan renews automatically are shown at checkout, and you confirm them to start. paid plans renew automatically until you cancel. you can cancel at any time and keep your paid features until the end of the period you've already paid for, then drop back to the free tier. payments are handled by our third-party payment processor, which acts as the merchant of record for your purchase — we never see or store your full card number.
if you're a consumer in the eu or uk, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal for digital services. because a paid plan gives you access right away, by subscribing you ask us to begin immediately and acknowledge that you lose that right once the service has been fully performed.
notei is offered "as is" and "as available." we don't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and ai and transcription features depend on third-party providers that can change, slow down, or go offline. we may add, change, or remove features over time.
to the maximum extent the law allows, notei and everyone who works on it are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for lost data, lost music, lost profits, or the consequences of relying on ai output. our total liability for any claim relating to notei is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or us$50. some places don't allow certain limitations, so parts of this may not apply to you.
you can stop using notei and delete your account at any time. we may suspend or end access if you break these terms, abuse the service or its ai endpoints, or create legal risk for us or other users. terms that by their nature should survive — ownership, acceptable use, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and governing law — continue to apply after termination.
these terms are governed by the laws of singapore, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except where mandatory local consumer law gives you other rights.
we may update these terms as notei grows. for material changes we'll update the "last updated" date above and, where appropriate, give notice in the app or by email. continuing to use notei after a change means you accept the updated terms.
if anything in these terms is unclear, just email us at [email protected] — we're happy to walk through it.
