what notei does today
everything below works in the live app now. the last group is on the paid tiers.
- write notes with the computer keyboard (press 5, then c e g) or with the mouse.
- play notes in from a MIDI keyboard.
- write for a band, an orchestra or a small group in one score.
- use transposing instruments such as B♭ trumpet and E♭ alto sax.
- move a passage or a whole score to a new key with the transpose tool.
- add chord symbols above the staff.
- add lyrics under the staff.
- play the score back with sampled real instruments.
- save scores to your notei account: up to 10 on the free tier, with no limit on the paid tiers.
- open MusicXML files as editable scores, and MIDI files and MuseScore files too.
- export to MusicXML, MIDI and PDF.
- ask the assistant about the score in front of you, and have it generate a short line from scratch as notes you can edit.
- on notei+ and full score: harmonise a line, arrange it for other instruments, extend a phrase, write a variation on it, get feedback on what is off in your writing, and export WAV audio.
the notebook page covers the editor in more detail, and the assistant page covers what the assistant can and can't do.
who it is for
anyone who writes music. that includes hobbyists who can hear a tune but have never written one down, songwriters putting a melody and chords on paper, band, orchestra and choir players writing out a part, composers working on a full score, and students doing a theory exercise or a composition assignment. you don't need a theory background, because the assistant explains what it is doing as it does it.
what it costs
Free stays free. the paid tiers add more assistant credits and the tools listed above.
| tier | price | for students | what it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | the full editor, playback, the assistant, generate, import, and MusicXML, MIDI and PDF export |
| notei+ | $9 a month | $4.50 a month | more credits, watermark-free PDF, WAV export, harmonise, arrange, extend, vary and feedback |
| full score | $18 a month | $9 a month | everything in notei+, with the highest credit allowance and full-ensemble generation |
students get 50% off every paid tier, and the first 1,000 subscribers lock in 40% off for a year. prices may change, so the pricing page always has the current numbers.

what notei is not
notei is not open source, not a note-taking app, and is not affiliated with any of these products from other companies:
- Notei GmbH, an Austrian sheet-music management service
- Notei (Google Play app ai.notei), a grocery receipt-scanning app
- NoteAI, an AI tool that turns videos and documents into summaries and notes
- Noteit, an app for saving and tagging clips in a personal library
how these pages are written and corrected
the guides, comparisons and tools on notei.co are written and checked by the notei team. a few rules apply to every page:
- notei features: a page only describes something notei does if it works in the live app today, and paid features are labelled as paid.
- other products: every fact about another program links to that company's own page, with the date it was checked. comparison pages say where the other program is better.
- music theory: each guide links its sources, such as the Open Music Theory textbook, so you can check the rule for yourself.
- disclosure: notei is our product, and every comparison page says so.
- drafting: the long-form guide and ranking text is drafted with a language model that runs on our own computer, then checked by the notei team against the vendor pages it links.
- corrections: if something is wrong or out of date, write to hello@notei.co. we fix the page and, for anything that changes a fact, note it on the updates page.
what changed and when
the updates page lists what has shipped in notei, with dates, newest first.
