notei / music notation on a Chromebook

music notation on a Chromebook

a Chromebook can't run the Windows or Mac installers that most music notation software ships as, so the usual answer is a notation editor that runs in the browser. notei is one: it runs in Chrome on a Chromebook with nothing to install, and you save your scores to your free notei account.

  • Chromebooks can't install Windows or Mac notation programs.
  • a browser-based editor, such as notei, works with nothing to install.
  • a USB MIDI keyboard works through Chrome's Web MIDI support.

can you use music notation software on a Chromebook?

yes. a Chromebook runs web apps in Chrome, so any notation editor that works in the browser runs on it, with nothing to install. notei, Flat and Noteflight all work this way. Sibelius offers an Android app for Chromebooks, while MuseScore Studio and Dorico list no ChromeOS version at all.

getting started

  1. open Chrome and go to app.notei.co.
  2. sign in or create a free notei account. your scores are saved to it.
  3. start a new score, pick your instruments, and enter notes from the keyboard or with the touchpad.

the free tier keeps up to 10 scores in the cloud. the paid tiers have no limit.

using a MIDI keyboard

Chrome supports MIDI devices, so a USB MIDI keyboard plugged into a Chromebook can play notes straight onto the staff in notei. if Chrome asks whether the site may use your MIDI devices, allow it. this works through the browser's Web MIDI API, which Chrome supports and some other browsers do not; caniuse.com keeps the current list.

on a school or work Chromebook

managed Chromebooks are set up by an administrator, who decides which sites and sign-in methods are allowed. if app.notei.co doesn't load, or sign-in is blocked, the setting is on the administrator's side and only they can change it, so ask whoever manages the device. nothing on the Chromebook itself needs to be installed or unlocked.

how notation software handles ChromeOS

this is what each program's own pages said about Chromebooks on 26 october 2026. the table compares how each one runs on ChromeOS and nothing else.

what about Linux apps?

many Chromebooks can also run Linux desktop apps once the Linux development environment is turned on in settings, as Google's Chromebook help explains. MuseScore Studio publishes a Linux build, so on a personal Chromebook with Linux turned on it is another route. school and work Chromebooks usually have Linux switched off by the administrator, and Linux apps need more storage and memory than a browser tab.

printing and sharing from a Chromebook

export the score as a PDF and print it from Chrome's print dialog, or save it to Google Drive and print from there. to send the score to someone who uses another notation program, export MusicXML instead, which MuseScore, Sibelius and Dorico all open. to hand in an audio file, WAV export is on notei's paid plans.

a two-staff score titled canon in D, violin in treble clef over bass in bass clef, two sharps, 4/4
a two-instrument score engraved in notei, the kind of score you can write, play back and print from a Chromebook with nothing installed.

what notei does in the browser

  • writes scores for one instrument or several, including transposing instruments such as B♭ trumpet and E♭ alto sax.
  • plays the score back with sampled real instruments, through the Chromebook's speakers or headphones.
  • adds chord symbols and lyrics.
  • has a music-theory assistant that reads the score you have open and answers questions about it in plain language.
  • exports MusicXML, MIDI and PDF (the PDF is watermarked on the free tier), and opens MusicXML, MIDI and MuseScore files.

the full list is on the features page. if you'd rather write by hand first, our free staff paper generator makes a printable PDF of blank staves.

common questions about Chromebooks and notation

can I use MuseScore on a Chromebook?

MuseScore Studio's download page lists Windows, macOS and Linux builds, with no ChromeOS version. on a personal Chromebook with Linux apps turned on, the Linux build is an option; on a school Chromebook, a browser-based editor is the practical choice.

does notei work offline on a Chromebook?

no. notei runs in the browser and saves your scores to your account, so it needs an internet connection. if you need to write offline, a desktop scorewriter on another computer is the better tool.

can I plug a MIDI keyboard into a Chromebook?

yes. a USB MIDI keyboard works in Chrome through the Web MIDI API, so in notei you can play notes straight onto the staff. allow MIDI access when Chrome asks.

why won't app.notei.co load on my school Chromebook?

managed Chromebooks only allow the sites and sign-in methods the administrator permits. if notei is blocked, ask whoever manages the device to allow app.notei.co; nothing needs to be installed.
