what is notei?
notei is a browser-based music notation editor with a music-theory assistant built in. you write real sheet music on a staff, hear it back with real instrument sounds, and ask notei about the score in plain language. it runs in any modern browser, with nothing to install.
is notei free?
yes. the full editor is free forever, including writing, real-instrument playback, and MusicXML and MIDI export. paid tiers add more assistant credits, watermark-free PDF, WAV audio export and deeper arranging: notei+ is $9 a month and full score is $18 a month, both half price for students. no card needed to start.
how is notei different from musescore?
musescore lets you write music, notei helps you write it. both are free notation editors, but notei runs in the browser with no install, and its assistant sits inside the score, so you can ask why a bar sounds wrong, harmonise a line, or have it double the melody in the trumpet. either way, you keep and edit every note. harmonising and arranging are on notei+ and full score.
does notei write the music for me?
only if you ask it to. notei can generate a line from scratch, harmonise it, or arrange it for other instruments (harmonise and arrange are on notei+ and full score), but everything it produces lands on the staff as ordinary editable notes rather than a finished render you can't touch. it is assistive, not automatic, and you stay the author of every note.
does notei work on a chromebook or a tablet?
yes. notei runs entirely in the browser, so it works on a chromebook, a school laptop, a mac, a windows pc, or a tablet. there is nothing to install, nothing to keep updated, and no licence to move between machines.
what can i export from notei?
MusicXML, MIDI, WAV, and PDF. MusicXML and MIDI export are free on every tier, PDF is free with a watermark, and watermark-free PDF and WAV audio export are on the paid tiers. because musescore, sibelius and dorico all open MusicXML, and so does finale where it is still installed (it was discontinued in august 2024), notei fits alongside whatever your school or ensemble already uses.
who is notei for?
anyone who writes music: hobbyists who can hear a tune but can't write it down yet, songwriters and composers, band, orchestra and choir players, students writing for a class, and teachers who need notation that runs on school hardware. no theory degree required, because notei explains what it is doing as it does it.
do i need an account?
yes, a free account, so your scores sync to every device you sign in on. no card needed.
